The Toyota ShareLunker program received its first entries of the 2011-12 season just ahead of the New Year, and there are a couple of familiar horses in the race.

Lake Fork kicked out the season's first entry on Dec. 27. Andrew Watson of Highland Village caught the 13.51-pound bass while he and his father were crappie fishing beneath the Texas 154 bridge. He was using live shiners for bait.

Watson told Texas Park and Wildlife Department officials the big bass had busted his 8-pound test line twice earlier the day. When the fish bit a third time, Watson managed to land it.

The second ShareLunker was caught on Dec. 28 at Lake Falcon along the Texas-Mexico border. Jason Brudnicki of Salt Lake City caught the 13.36-pounder off an underwater ledge using a Strike King 6XD crankbait.

According to James Benedale at Falcon Lake Tackle, four other Falcon bass over 13 pounds have been caught and released since the ShareLunker program's 26th season began Oct. 1. Two of them were caught last week, weighing 13.40 and 13.36 pounds.

Youth blue cat record pending

The big blues are on the prowl at Lake Worth. Just ask 12-year-old Lane Ferguson of Fort Worth.

Ferguson was fishing for catfish with his dad, Chad, on Dec. 23 when he hooked and landed a whopper blue catfish weighing 66.28 pounds on a rod and reel.

Chad Ferguson, a catfish expert and fishing guide, says the paperwork has been submitted to TPWD to have the fish recognized as a state junior angler record, lake record, junior angler lake record and a lake catch-and-release record for that species.
