AROUND THE STATE

AUSTIN -- Here is the weekly fishing report as compiled for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for Jan. 20 (full report available on Web at www.txfishing.com).

CENTRAL

BASTROP: Water clear. Black bass are good on Rat-L-Traps and chartreuse jigs. Crappie are good on minnows over brush piles in 15-20 feet. Channel and blue catfish are fair on stinkbait and liver. Yellow catfish are slow.

BELTON: Water fairly clear; 53 degrees; 1.69' low. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are fair on live shad. White bass are fair on minnows. Crappie are good on minnows at night. Channel and blue catfish are fair on trotlines baited with frozen shad. Yellow catfish are slow.

BROWNWOOD: Water clear; 51 degrees; 7.82' low. Black bass are fair on chartreuse/black jigs, small crankbaits, and watermelon red 4" worms over brush piles. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are fair on Li'l Fishies and watermelon red crankbaits under lighted docks at night. Crappie are good on Li'l Fishies and minnows over brush piles. Channel catfish are fair on stinkbait, minnows and shrimp. Yellow catfish are slow.

BUCHANAN: Water lightly stained; 54 degrees; 23.85' low. Black bass are good on black Curb's hair jigs, watermelon red JDC curl tail grubs on jigheads, and suspending crankbaits over deeper rock piles along ledges and points in 8-20 feet. Striped bass are good drifting live shad, and jigging Spoiler Shad swim baits and Pirk Minnows near Garrett Island in 28-40 feet. White bass are slow to fair jigging Tiny Traps and Pirk Minnows. Crappie are slow on live minnows over brush piles. Channel catfish are slow. Yellow and blue catfish are slow.

CANYON LAKE: Water lightly stained; 51 degrees; 8.59' low. Black bass are good on Texas rigged Red Shad worms, pumpkin JDC drop shot worms, and tubes on jigheads in stickups in 6-15 feet. Striped bass are fair jigging Pirk Minnows and trolling Gizz 4's or Shad Raps on down riggers over humps in the lower end of the lake in 40-60 feet. White bass are fair but small on blade baits along main lake bluffs. Smallmouth bass are very good on Tomato Red JDC grubs, smoke/red flake tubes on jigheads, and smoke drop shot worms along main lake points and bluff ledges. Crappie are slow. Channel catfish are slow. Yellow and blue catfish are slow.

COLEMAN: Water clear; 52 degrees; 10.56' low. Black bass are good on watermelon Rat-L-Traps and crankbaits. Hybrid striper are fair on minnows and white striper jigs. Crappie are good on minnows. Channel and blue catfish are good on stinkbait, nightcrawlers, and frozen shrimp. Yellow catfish are slow.

COLORADO RIVER: (At Colorado Bend State Park) Water clear. Black bass are slow. Striped bass are slow. White bass are fair on minnows and slabs. Crappie are fair on minnows. Catfish are fair on nightcrawlers, stinkbait, and frozen shrimp in deep holes.

FAYETTE: Water clear; 52 degrees. Black bass are fair on Carolina rigged soft plastics and Rat-L-Traps. Channel and blue catfish are slow.

GRANBURY: Water clear; 0.43' low. Black bass are fair on chartreuse soft plastics, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and Rat-L-Traps. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are good on minnows. Catfish are fair on frozen shrimp and stinkbait.

GRANGER: Water clear; 46 degrees; 0.46' low. Black bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Blue catfish are fair on prepared baits in 6-15 feet. Yellow catfish are slow.

LBJ: Water stained; 54 degrees; 0.31' low. Black bass are fair to good on black/blue Curb's jigs and green pumpkin tubes on docks. Striped bass are slow. White bass are fair to good on silver Pirk Minnows and Spoiler Shads in the channel near the power plant. Crappie are fair on minnows in brush piles under heated docks. Channel catfish are fair on minnows and nightcrawlers. Yellow and blue catfish are slow.

NAVARRO MILLS: Water stained; 50 degrees; 0.18' high. Black bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are very good on black/chartreuse and orange/chartreuse jigs at the marina. Channel and blue catfish are fair on shrimp and stinkbait. Yellow catfish are slow.

PROCTOR: Water clear; 53 degrees; 7.29' low. Black bass are fair on chartreuse spinnerbaits and soft plastics. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and chartreuse tube jigs. Channel and blue catfish are good on frozen shad and shrimp. Yellow catfish are slow.

SOMERVILLE: Water murky; 53 degrees; 0.56' high. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and green and black tube jigs. Channel and blue catfish are excellent on bloodbait. Yellow catfish are slow.

STILLHOUSE: Water stained; 54 degrees; 0.68' high. Black bass are fair on minnows and watermelon seed worms. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Carp are good on corn in 20 feet. Channel and blue catfish are fair on nightcrawlers. Yellow catfish are slow.

TRAVIS: Water stained; 53 degrees; 23.62' low. Black bass are good on chrome jigging spoons, black jigs, and smoke grubs in 28-45 feet. Striped bass are fair on minnows and chrome spoons in 30-40 feet. White bass are good on minnows and chrome jigging spoons in 35-50 feet. Crappie are good on minnows and pink and white tube jigs in 38-48 feet. Channel and blue catfish are fair on nightcrawlers and cut bait in 32-48 feet. Yellow catfish are slow.

WALTER E. LONG: Water lightly stained; 54 degrees. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are very good on minnows in the cove and at the hot water outlet. White bass are very good on minnows. Crappie are good on red wigglers. Channel and blue catfish are good on nightcrawlers. Yellow catfish are slow.

WHITNEY: Water lightly stained; 4.08' low. Black bass are fair on watermelon red spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and Rat-L-Traps. Striped bass are fair on minnows and chartreuse striper jigs. White bass are fair on minnows. Crappie are fair on minnows and blue tube jigs. Catfish are good on frozen shrimp, nightcrawlers, and stinkbait.

NORTHEAST

ATHENS: Water fairly clear, 44-50 degrees; 0.43' high. Black bass are slow to fair on jigs and Texas rigs worked slowly. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs fished over brush piles. Catfish are fair on prepared bait.

BOB SANDLIN: Water stained; 43-49 degrees; 0.05' high. Black bass are fair on Rat-L-Traps and wacky rigs. Crappie are fair under the bridges. No reports on white bass or catfish.

BRIDGEPORT: Water fairly clear; 43-49 degrees; 8.71' low. No report available.

CADDO: Water murky; 44-51 degrees; 1.82' high. Black bass are slow on flukes, jigs and spinnerbaits. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair on nightcrawlers and cut shad.

CEDAR CREEK: Water stained; 43-49 degrees; 0.08' high. Black bass are slow. White bass are good on slabs. Hybrid striper are fair on live shad and large slabs. Crappie are fair to good on minnows. Catfish are fair drifting cut shad.

COOPER: Water off color; 42-48 degrees; 0.04' high. No report available.

FAIRFIELD: Water fairly clear; 58-86 degrees. Black bass are fair on Senkos, spinnerbaits and split shot rigged Ring Frys. Redfish are fair to good on live bait.

FORK: Water stained; 43-49 degrees; 0.15' high. Black bass are fair on jigs, Rat-L-Traps and Carolina rigs. Crappie are fair to good on live minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair on live and prepared bait.

GRAPEVINE: Water stained; 44-51 degrees; 0.4' high. Black bass are slow to fair on crankbaits, Texas rigs and Rat-L-Traps. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. White bass are fair to good on slabs. Catfish are fair on prepared bait and cut bait.

JOE POOL: Water off color; 43-49 degrees; 0.41' high. Black bass are fair on crankbaits, Rat-L-Traps and Texas rigs. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. White bass are fair to good on slabs. Catfish are fair on prepared baits and nightcrawlers.

LAKE O' THE PINES: Water stained; 43-49 degrees; 4.6' high. Black bass are fair on Rat-L-Traps, jigs and Carolina rigs. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs in 15-25 feet. Catfish are fair on cut bait and nightcrawlers.

LAVON: Water stained; 44-51 degrees; 0.25' high. Black bass are fair on jerkbaits, crankbaits and drop shot rigs. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair to good on nightcrawlers and prepared bait.

LEWISVILLE: Water stained; 43-50 degrees; conservation pool. Black bass are fair on Rat-L-Traps, Carolina rigs, drop shot rigs and shad pattern crankbaits. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. White bass are fair to good on slabs. Hybrid striper are fair on slabs and Sassy Shad. Catfish are good on prepared bait and cut shad.

MARTIN CREEK: 0.02' low. No report available.

MONTICELLO: Water fairly clear; 52-84 degrees; 0.62' high. Black bass are fair to good on drop shot rigs, Rat-L-Traps and Carolina rigs. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair on prepared bait.

PALESTINE: Water lightly stained; 43-50 degrees; 0.52' high. Black bass are fair on crankbaits, Rat-L-Traps, Carolina rigs and jigs. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. Hybrid striper are fair on slabs, Sassy Shad and live shad. White bass are fair to good on slabs and minnows. Catfish are fair on prepared bait and cut shad.

RAY HUBBARD: Water fairly clear; 45-50 degrees; 0.01' high. Black bass are fair on white or chrome crankbaits, Carolina rigs and drop shot rigs. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. White bass are good on slabs. Hybrid striper are fair to good on slabs and dead-sticking Sassy Shad. Catfish are fair on cut and prepared bait.

RAY ROBERTS: Water muddy to lightly stained; 44-48 degrees; 0.12' high. Black bass are slow to fair on chrome/black Bomber crankbaits fished slowly. No report on crappie. White bass are good on C.C. jigging spoons in 25-40 feet. No report on catfish.

RICHLAND CHAMBERS: Water off color; 44-51 degrees; 0.02' high. Black bass are fair on Rat-L-Traps, crankbaits and jigs. White bass are fair to good on slabs and live minnows. Hybrid striper are fair on slabs and live shad. Crappie are fair to good on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair on prepared baits and nightcrawlers.

TAWAKONI: Water fairly clear; 44-50 degrees; 0.21' high. Black bass are fair on Texas rigs and Rat-L-Traps. Crappie are fair on minnows. White bass are fair to good on slabs. Striped bass and hybrid striper are fair on live shad and slabs. Catfish are fair on prepared bait.

TEXOMA: Water off color; 44-49 degrees; 0.02' low. Black bass are slow to fair on crankbaits and Texas rigs. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. Striped bass are fair to good on slabs worked slowly. Catfish are fair to good on cut shad and prepared bait.

WEATHERFORD: Water lightly stained; 45-51 degrees; 2.93' low. No report available.

WRIGHT PATMAN: Water stained; 44-49 degrees; 17.01' high. Black bass are slow on Texas rigs and Rat-L-Traps. Crappie are fair on minnows. Catfish are fair on cut shad and prepared bait.

SOUTH

AMISTAD: Water clear; 54 degrees; 1.92' low. Black bass are fair on crankbaits and soft plastic worms. Striped bass are fair on slabs and grubs. White bass are fair on slabs and crankbaits. Catfish are fair on shrimp, nightcrawlers, and cheesebait. Yellow catfish are good on trotlines and droplines baited with live perch. Everyone in the boat must have a Mexico fishing license (if fishing the Mexico side) whether fishing or not.

BRAUNIG: Water clear; 56 degrees. Black bass are good on spinnerbaits, dark soft plastic worms, and minnows in the reeds and near the dam. Striped bass are good on liver and shad, and on spoons in deeper water. Redfish are fair on perch, shad, and silver spoons, and on tilapia, crawfish, perch, and shad near Dead Tree Point. Channel and blue catfish are excellent on liver, shrimp, perch, and shad in 20-30 feet.

CALAVERAS: Water clear; 56 degrees. Black bass are good on dark soft plastic worms, live minnows, and crankbaits around reed beds and near the dam. Striped bass are good on Rat-L-Traps near the dam in 15-20 feet, and on chicken livers and shad along the shoreline. Redfish are fair on live perch, shad, tilapia, and crawfish. Crappie are slow. Channel catfish are excellent on liver, shrimp, and nightcrawlers. Blue catfish are good on liver and nightcrawlers. Yellow catfish are slow.

CHOKE CANYON: Water clear; 54 degrees; 9.29' low. Black bass to 7 pounds are good on heavy jigs and large soft plastic lizards in the grass, and fair on crankbaits. White bass are fair on minnows upriver. Crappie are slow but some large ones caught on minnows. Drum are fair on live worms. Channel and blue catfish are good on punchbait in 2-7 feet. Yellow catfish are slow.

COLETO CREEK: Water stained; 57 degrees (73 degrees at discharge); 0.02' low. Black bass are slow. Striped bass are fair on chartreuse crankbaits. White bass are fair on slabs. Crappie are good on minnows in 10-16 feet. Channel and blue catfish are fair on trotlines baited with live bait and nightcrawlers. Yellow catfish are fair on trotlines baited with live perch.

FALCON: Water clear; 57 degrees. Black bass are good on spinnerbaits. Striped bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are good on shrimp and cut bait. Yellow catfish are slow. Everyone in the boat must have a Mexico fishing license (if fishing the Mexico side) whether fishing or not.

SOUTHEAST

CONROE: Water fairly clear; 0.13' high. Black bass are good on watermelon and watermelon red soft plastics, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits. Striped bass are fair on minnows. Crappie are good on minnows. Catfish are fair on stinkbait and frozen shrimp.

GIBBONS CREEK: Water clear. Black bass are good on watermelon soft plastics. Crappie are good on minnows and blue tube jigs. Catfish are good on frozen shrimp and stinkbait.

HOUSTON COUNTY: Water stained; 51 degrees; 0.58' high. Black bass to 4 pounds are good on watermelon soft plastic worms and chartreuse/chrome Rat-L-Traps around the islands in 5-10 feet. Crappie are fair on live minnows near the dam. Bream are slow. Channel and blue catfish to 6 pounds are good on live worms off piers on the south side of the lake.

LIVINGSTON: Water fairly clear; 54 degrees; 0.14' high. Black bass are good on silver/black spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Striped bass are good on Rat-L-Traps. White bass are fair on Rat-L-Traps. Crappie are good on minnows and chartreuse tube jigs. Blue catfish are good on trotlines baited with shad and cut bait. Yellow catfish are slow.

SAM RAYBURN: Water stained; 54 degrees; 1.74' low. Black bass are good on watermelon and pumpkinseed soft plastics, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits. White bass are fair on live minnows and chartreuse tube jigs. Crappie are fair on minnows. Bream are fair on worms. Catfish are good on frozen shrimp and stinkbait.

STEINHAGEN: 0.17' high. No report available.

TOLEDO BEND: Water stained; 54 degrees; 2.52' low. Black bass are fair on watermelon and chartreuse spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are good on minnows and blue tube jigs over brush piles. Bream are good on worms. Channel and blue catfish are good on liver, nightcrawlers, and stinkbait. Yellow catfish are slow.

PANHANDLE

GREENBELT: Water stained; 34 degrees; 33.37' low. Black bass are slow on Carolina-rigged watermelon or pumpkin soft plastics and live bait. Crappie are slow on jigs and minnows. White bass are fair on live bait. Smallmouth bass are slow on live bait. Walleye are fair on live bait. Catfish are fair on live or cut bait.

MACKENZIE: Water lightly stained; 34 degrees; 79.40' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are slow on minnows and jigs. White bass and striped bass are fair on live bait. Smallmouth bass are slow. Walleye are fair on live bait. Catfish are fair on live bait.

MEREDITH: Water stained; 37 degrees; 77.96' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows. White bass are fair on live bait. Smallmouth bass are slow. Walleye are fair on live bait. Channel catfish are fair on live bait.

PALO DURO: Water lightly stained; 32 degrees; 58.71' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows. Smallmouth bass are slow. Walleye are slow on live bait. Channel catfish are fair on live bait.

WEST

ALAN HENRY: Water lightly stained; 47 degrees; 1.31' low. Black bass are fair on live baits and black/blue jigs suspended in trees. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair on live bait.

ARROWHEAD: Water lightly stained; 40 degrees; 6.80' low. Black bass are fair on crankbaits or black/blue jigs 1-4 feet deep off rocky points. Crappie are fair on black and green plastics off the derricks in 20-25 feet. White bass to 15 inches are good off rocky points. Blue catfish are fair on cheese bait while drift fishing or anchored in 8-10 feet depth.

COLORADO CITY: Water clear; 53 degrees; 11.91' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are slow. White bass are slow. Catfish are slow.

FORT PHANTOM HILL: Water clear; 52 degrees; 5.27' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. White bass are good on live bait and small shad-colored crankbaits. Catfish are fair on live bait.

HUBBARD CREEK: Water lightly stained; 50 degrees; 7.55' low. Black bass are slow on live bait and black/blue jigs worked suspended along grass lines and timber. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows. White bass are good on live bait. Catfish are fair on live and cut bait.

NASWORTHY: Water lightly stained; 48 degrees. Black bass are slow on live bait. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. Redfish are slow. White bass and striped bass are fair on live bait. Catfish are fair on live bait.

OAK CREEK: Water lightly stained; 48 degrees; 7.65' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. Catfish are fair on live bait.

O.H. IVIE: Water lightly stained; 50 degrees; 21.74' low. Black bass are fair on slow-rolled spinnerbaits and live bait worked along secondary points and channels. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. White bass are fair on live bait. Smallmouth bass are fair on live bait. Channel catfish are good on live bait.

POSSUM KINGDOM: Water stained; 50 degrees; 5.36' low. Black bass are fair on watermelon soft plastics and shad-colored crankbaits off points in the Long Hollow and Caddo areas. Crappie are slow on live bait and jigs. White bass are good on silver jigging spoons suspended near Costello Island. Striped bass are good on silver spoons and shad-colored crankbaits along southern lake points. Catfish are good on live shad and cut liver by the public boat ramp on points to the west.

SPENCE: Water lightly stained; 47 degrees; 64.59' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are slow. White bass are slow. Striped bass and hybrid striper are slow. Catfish are slow.

STAMFORD: Water lightly stained; 48 degrees; 3.69' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and jigs. White and striped bass are fair on live bait. Catfish are good on live bait.

SWEETWATER: Water lightly stained; 47 degrees; 7.60' low. Black bass are slow on live bait. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs. White bass are fair on live bait. Catfish are fair on live bait.

WHITE RIVER: Water lightly stained; 47 degrees; 24.68' low. Black bass are slow. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows. Walleye are fair on live bait. Channel catfish are fair on live bait.

COASTAL

NORTH SABINE: Redfish are good in the marsh on small topwaters and Stanley Ribbits. Trout are fair on the shorelines on Corkies and Catch 2000s.

SOUTH SABINE: Sheepshead and black drum are good at the jetty on live shrimp. Trout are fair around the Reef on live shrimp.

BOLIVAR: Trout are fair to good on the south shoreline on soft plastics and plugs. Black drum and redfish are good at Rollover Pass.

TRINITY BAY: Trout are good for drifters working pods of shad and mullet on Bass Assassins, Trout Killers and Sand Eels. Redfish are good at the spillway on crabs and mullet.

EAST GALVESTON BAY: Trout are fair to good on the south shoreline on Catch 5s, MirrOlures and Catch 2000s. Whiting and sand trout are good on the edge of the Intracoastal on fresh shrimp.

WEST GALVESTON BAY: Waders have taken good trout in the mud and shell on topwaters and Corkies in the afternoon. Sheepshead, redfish and black drum are good at the jetty on shrimp and crabs.

FREEPORT: Sand trout and sheepshead are good on live shrimp on the reefs. Black drum are good in Cold Pass and San Luis pass on cracked blue crabs.

EAST MATAGORDA BAY: Trout are fair to good for drifters in the afternoon on live shrimp over humps and scattered shell. Redfish are fair to good on the edge of the Intracoastal on crabs and mullet.

WEST MATAGORDA BAY: Redfish are fair to good in Oyster Lake on shrimp. Trout are fair on shell and grass on soft plastics. Black drum are fair to good at the jetty on crabs.

PORT O'CONNOR: Trout and redfish are good on topwaters over soft mud in waist-deep water in San Antonio Bay. Trout and redfish are fair for drifters working the back lakes with live shrimp.

ROCKPORT: Redfish are good in the Lydia Ann Channel on crabs. Trout are fair over grass while drifting with live shrimp.

PORT ARANSAS: Redfish and black drum are good in the Shrimpboat Channel on crabs and finger mullet. Redfish and sheepshead are fair to good at the jetty on shrimp.

CORPUS CHRISTI: Redfish are fair to good around Shamrock Cove on small topwaters and spoons. Trout are fair to good on the edge of the spoils on Gulps and live shrimp.

BAFFIN BAY: Trout are fair to good in mud and grass on Corkies and topwaters. Redfish have been taken along the spoils on gold spoons and Gulps.

PORT MANSFIELD: Trout are fair to good on topwaters around sand and grass holes. Working the edge of the Intracoastal has paid off as well. Redfish are fair to good while drifting pot holes.

SOUTH PADRE: Trout and redfish are fair to good on the edge of the Intracoastal on DOA Shrimp and Gulps. Redfish are good in South Cullen Bay on Gulps.

PORT ISABEL: Snook are fair in the Brownsville Ship Channel on free-lined shrimp. Trout and redfish are fair to good in South Bay on live shrimp. Redfish are fair at Three Island on small topwaters and soft plastics under rattling corks.
