Rings expected despite lack of sanctioning
Ryan Watkins said SFA's national championship win seems to have grabbed the attention of university officials. That's a good thing.
College bass fishing is not yet recognized as a NCAA sanctioned sport, but it is becoming increasingly popular each year. Teams don't receive any financial help from their schools. Still, participating schools benefit by receiving a portion of the winnings when one of their teams do well. The remainder of the purse goes to the bass club.
"The university seems to be pretty excited about it," Watkins said. "We are supposed to meet with the SFA Board of Regents, and I've been told we are going to get national championship rings. That's really pretty cool."
If SFA brass is smart, they will feed this horse, saddle it and ride as far as it will run. The horse in this case is Andrew Upshaw.
Being the first collegiate angler to ever qualify for the Bassmasters Classic, Upshaw is likely to garner his share of media publicity leading up to the event. Should he be fortunate enough win it, the feather in SFA's cap could grow to monumental proportions overnight.
