Texas A&M duo win Texas Regional Championship
NATCHITOCHES, La. -- Texas A&M's Andrew Shafer and Paul Manley won the National Guard FLW College Fishing Texas Regional Championship on Monday.
Shafer and Manley caught 6 pounds, 10 ounces, worth of fish on Day 1 and stood in fourth place. They fell to fifth after catching 6-11 on Day 2, but the Aggies brought in 17-2 on the final day, the tournament's best catch and good enough to win the title with a 30-7 total.
"We told everyone that we were going to do something different, and we were going to go out there and compete," Shafer said. "We had nothing to lose, so we went out there and did our best and the big ones bit."
Manley and Shafer won $25,000 for A&M and a Ranger 177TR in school colors for A&M's bass club.
Texas State's team of David Cosner and Jay McCollum placed second with a 27-9 total. They won $12,500 for the school and another $12,500 for the school's bass club.
Tanner Morgan and John Anderson of Tarleton State placed third at 25-1. They won $5,500 for their school and $5,500 for their bass club.
Northwestern State's Jeffrey Rich and Aaron Sistrunk took fourth. They finished with a 21-11 total to win two $4,000 checks.
Baylor's Jay Holland and Andrew McAdams finished with 20-10 for fifth. They won two $3,000 checks.
