Hunting season has some life yet

The statewide general deer season rolled to a close on Jan. 4, but the 2008-09 Texas hunting calendar is far from empty. Here's a look at the menu:

* Duck season runs through Sunday in the North and South zones and in the High Plains Management Unit.

* Light goose and Canada goose seasons end Sunday in the Eastern Zone.

* Western Zone light goose and dark goose seasons close Feb. 8.

* The Light Geese Conservation Order season runs through Feb. 9-March 29 in the West Zone; Monday through March 29 in the East Zone.

* Sandhill Crane season ends Feb. 8 in zones A and B; Jan. 25 in Zone C.

* South Zone dove season closes Jan. 13.

* Pheasant season in Chambers, Jefferson and Liberty counties, closes Feb. 22.

* Quail season runs through Feb. 22 statewide.

* Rio Grande fall turkey season runs through Jan. 18 in 26 South Texas counties; the season closes Feb. 22 in Brooks, Kenedy, Kleberg and Willacy counties.

* Special Youth Only Rio Grande turkey weekend, Jan. 17-18.

* Whitetail deer late antlerless and spike season ended last week in the Edwards Plateau (39 counties) but runs through Feb. 1 in South Texas (30 counties).

* Squirrel season in 51 East Texas counties ends Feb. 1. A special month long spring season runs May 1-31.
